Road Trip - Florida Keys

As you leave mainland Florida you come across the bridge at Jewfish Creek to the island of Key Largo. Everything is located by the mile markers in the Keys. Mile marker 108 means it's 104 miles to Key West and then 4 miles across Key West to the end of the road at MM Zero.

The Holiday Inn on Key Largo has the boat that was used in the Humphrey Bogart movie called the African Queen. It's something to see if you're a Bogart fan like I am

Now to one of my favorite Keys spots for dinner

Mrs. Macs Kitchen is at MM 99 just south of the Holiday Inn. It's a very good place to eat with an excellent Keys vibe.

Nest stop on the highway is Islamorada

Islamorada is my favorite place in the Keys. Islamorada is actually a village of five islands starting about MM 88 down to MM 74...Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe, Upper Matecumbe, Windley Key and Plantation Key

The famous giant lobster in Islamorada

Whale Harbor Marina is a good spot to stop and see the water and the fishing boats. There's a very cool bar across the upper level with great views of the Atlantic and the Alligator Reef lighthouse

On to one of  my favorite spots...the Lorelei

The Lorelei is a great little spot on the Gulf side of the highway. Awesome views and the best fried snapper sandwich on the planet

I always stop at Wordwide Sportsman in Islamorada. It's a Bass Pro Shop store so it's big and stocked with something for everybody. It also has a replica of Hemingway's boat the Pilar that is well worth seeing. Also a tiki bar and restuarant outside.

On to a must stop on the Overseas Highway...Robbie's Marina

Feed the tarpon by hand at Robbie's

Heading down the highway you come to the world famous Bud n' Mary's Marina...the sportfishing capitol of the world

The water views are stunning as you drive down. Sometimes hopping over islands not much wider than the road

Next stop is Marathon

And the amazing highlight of the drive...the Seven Mile Bridge. It spans from Knight's Key in Marathon to Little Duck Key in the lower keys. Build next to the old railroad bridge built by Henry Flagler over 100 years ago. Much of the old bridge still exists today...

Next up comes Bahia Honda where the old railroad bridge is an awesome sight. At Bahia Honda State Park you can walk out on to the old bridge

Almost to Key West in the lower keys you go across keys with names like Big Pine, Little Torch, Ramrod, Summerland, Cudjoe, Sugarloaf, the Saddlebunches, Big Coppit and Stock Island

All the way down to MM 4

The end of the road at Whitehead and Fleming...I hope you enjoyed the drive over the amazing Overseas Highway

  1. thanks for the tour. florida seems like such a wasteland as does much of america, ie. nevada, wisconsin, california, texas, etc
