Labor Day 1935
Many times I have driven past the hurricane monument in Islamorada always meaning to stop. Most people driving the Keys are probably the same. No telling how many people have driven by and never knew it was there.
The marker is there to remember all the people who lost their lives in one of the worst hurricanes ever to hit the United States on Labor Day 1935
The marker was dedicated in November of 1937. It stands at Mile Marker 81.5 on US 1 across the street from the library
Over 400 people were killed many of them war veterans who were working on the construction of the Overseas Highway
The remains of over 300 people are buried in a crypt at the base of the monument
On your next trip through the Keys stop for a few minutes and remember...
