Labor Day 1935

Many times I have driven past the hurricane monument in Islamorada always meaning to stop. Most people driving the Keys are probably the same. No telling how many people have driven by and never knew it was there.
The marker is there to remember all the people who lost their lives in one of the worst hurricanes ever to hit the United States on Labor Day 1935

The marker was dedicated in November of 1937. It stands at Mile Marker 81.5 on US 1 across the street from the library

Over 400 people were killed many of them war veterans who were working on the construction of the Overseas Highway

The remains of over 300 people are buried in a crypt at the base of the monument

On your next trip through the Keys stop for a few minutes and remember...

Sunset Sunday

On a lazy Sunday afternoon we decided to head over to the beach and grab something to eat and watch the sunset. We decided to go to the Hurricane Restaurant on Pass-A-Grille beach. The Hurricane sits across the street from the Gulf and has been there over 30 years.

The rooftop bar offers a spectacular view of the Gulf

Outstanding fried grouper sandwich and shrimp tacos for dinner...now across the street to the beach

Cruise ship headed out from the Port of Tampa to points south

Palm trees, sand dunes and church steeples

Nothing like watching waves roll in

Great day for shelling

23 minutes until sunset the view is amazing

Sunset

A beautiful ending to a great day in Florida
